Data Centers
Johnson Controls has the expertise to help you determine the right solution for your data center, whether it be a water-based or clean agent system.
Our team can help weight key considerations when selecting a fire suppression system:
- What’s the size of the data hall? As space increases, the cost of a gaseous system grows exponentially, potentially making water mist or a fire sprinkler system more cost effective
- Where in the building is the data hall located? Venting gas the outside can be challenging for an interior space or very simple when it is along the building envelope.
- How are you protecting the rest of the building? It can be economical to protect your data hall with a water mist or preaction system connected to the same pump as the building fire sprinkler system.
- What other hazards are in the rest of the building that have unique challenges, such as lithium ion batteries
Our portfolio of solutions includes:
- INERGEN clean agent systems, including the award-winning acoustic nozzle
- AquaMist ULF water mist solutions for data centers
- Preaction valves and a broad offering for fire sprinkler systems
- CLEANGUARD+ Extinguishers – Protection of facilities that typically contain sensitive or irreplaceable equipment and materials that could be damaged or destroyed by water, foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide, need a clean agent fire extinguisher. Offering superior performance, CLEANGUARD+ extinguishers are electrically nonconductive, environmentally friendly, and extremely low in toxicity. Rated for Class A, B, and C fires, the extinguisher agent leaves no residue, requires no cleanup after discharge, and will not cause collateral damage to materials, equipment, and facilities.
Battery storage can present a unique set of challenges without straightforward answers to how to protect the hazard. Lithium-Ion batteries in particular are at risk of thermal runaway – a dangerous chemical reaction within a battery cell that quickly spreads to adjacent cells. As it spreads, these cells collectively generate heat and smoke, which can potentially cause a fire event.
Why partner with us:
- Receive early-warning detection of battery failure prior to thermal runaway with Lithium-Ion Risk Prevention System
- Johnson Controls can consult with you on your protection challenges and help determine the best fire suppression options
- Our engineering and logistics expertise allows us to consult and provide custom application solutions for a single location or at scale across many facilities
- Many Tyco automatic fire sprinklers are listed for use in EH occupancies and can be used to protect lithium ion battery ESS in accordance with NFPA 855 and NFPA 13, including:
- Series TY-B Sprinklers
- Series TY-L Sprinklers
- Series ELO-231
- Ultra K17
- Model EC-25
Mechanical rooms may house parts of the fire suppression system (such as fire sprinkler risers), as well as HVAC equipment, fuels, solvents, oils, greases, and other flammable liquids. Our team can consult to help you determine the best methods to effectively protect this space and leverage infrastructure of suppression systems in other areas of the building.
Keep all areas of your facility in compliance with Xaap, a SaaS inspection reporting tool. Streamline the inspection process for your building systems and devices – providing a single, centralized platform for building compliance data. Designed specifically for Building & Facility Managers, Inspectors, Technicians and Service providers, Xaap is real-time access to critical information – at your fingertips.
Why partner with us?
Johnson Controls offers a broad portfolio of protection options for the various hazards that may occupy your data center mechanical room, including:
- AquaMist machinery spaces protection — if water mist or a sprinkler system is protecting other building areas, this system can work off the same water source and pump to save cost and complexity
- SAPPHIRE PLUS is designed to quickly suppress fires in occupied areas without causing harm and where clean-up of other agents may pose a problem. SAPPHIRE® PLUS systems help reduce the footprint, installation cost and service time by offering higher fill densities to reduce the number of containers. The SAPPHIRE PLUS system is UL/ULC listed and carries FM and EN approvals. The system can be designed to meet the requirements of NFPA 2001, EN 15004 and ISO 14520 with components approved to provide top quality fire suppression.
Enclosures that house power generators are at risk for diesel and other flammable liquid fires. Bladder tank systems with non-fluorinated Class B firefighting foam provide highly effective fire protection for these flammable liquid hazards.
Why partner with us:
- Johnson Controls offers a complete portfolio of UL listed, FM approved bladder tank systems with non-fluorinated foam concentrates for reliable, fully integrated system performance
- AquaMist machinery spaces protection includes solutions for both local application and total flood configurations that have undergone extensive full-scale fire testing
- High Pressure Carbon Dioxide Systems are especially effective for non-occupied hazards. Personnel occupying areas protected by carbon dioxide systems must be evacuated prior to system discharge.
Johnson Controls offers a range of fire protection solutions ideal for completing your fire protection needs in the administrative and other lower hazard areas, including broad water-based suppression system and portable extinguisher offerings build to fit most wall-mounted storage cabinets.
Why partner with us? Our team can help minimize complexity and cost by partnering with you to determine the best protection scheme for specific areas, as well as understand the big picture of the building and its various hazards.
Our solutions for administrative and lower hazard areas include:
SENTRY CO2 Extinguishers
- Compact and lightweight, SENTRY extinguishers are made to rigorous ANSUL standards of quality and craftsmanship

CLEANGUARD+ Extinguishers
As a provider of both water-based and gaseous suppression systems, Johnson Controls has decades of expertise in helping select fire protection solutions for specific applications. Cable management systems (CMS) containing power and networking cables. As you determine the pathway and containment method, the JCI team can recommend solutions designed to protect these areas.
Why partner with us:
- AquaMist ULF offers design flexibility for different layouts and has been extensively tested to provide flexible protection below floors, in cable voids or wherever cable trays are located.
- SAPPHIRE Clean Agent Systems quickly suppresses fires and protects sensitive equipment without causing harm to people or the environment and can be configured in concealed spaces
